Bury Independent Living Development (BuryILD) is a charity that provides help and care for adults with learning disabilities to live independently in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury and the bordering area. Our principle objective is to enable people to become valued members of their community, and to lead an independent and fulfilled life of their choosing.
What We Do
The service we offer can range from 24 hour support for someone with complex needs through to more targeted support. Individuals may have their own tenancies or may still be living in the family home. We also offer Transitional Support for individuals, and their families, who are taking steps towards independent supported living.
At BuryILD we pride ourselves on the standard of care and support we provide. We believe that ALL people with a learning disability are entitled to:
- Have an equal right to choice, respect and opportunity.
- Be seen and treated as individuals.
- Be supported in their local community according to their needs.
- Be supported and encouraged to express their own views.
- Be consulted and involved in all decision-making.
- Be involved in choosing their own support staff.
- Have a continuing relationship with their families, if that is their wish.
Whatever level of support required we work in a person centred way that fully complies with the four key principles in The Governments White Paper ‘Valuing People’ 2001; rights, independence, choice and inclusion.
We work alongside Bury MBC and Government agencies to assist families to plan for the future. Suggest we keep ‘local’ as this includes NHS community teams and advocacy organisations as well as Bury MBC.
In 2013 Contact (a local Bury charity offering social and leisure opportunities for people with learning disabilities) joined us to form the Contact Leisure Division of BuryILD. Though under the same roof, this division is separate. The two divisions of the charity complement each other and work hand in hand. The social and leisure opportunities of Contact Leisure benefit the supported people of BuryILD, and Contact Leisure benefits from the experience and reputation of BuryILD.
How We Started
Bury Independent Living Development (BuryILD) is a family-led service founded in 1993 by a group of parents who wished to see their sons and daughters, who have learning disabilities, settled in homes of their own with the support they needed in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury. In 2013 Contact (a local Bury group offering social and leisure opportunities for people with learning disabilities) joined us to form the Contact Leisure arm of BuryILD.
BuryILD is a registered charity (No. 1042250) and is a non-profit making company limited by guarantee (No.2970299).
A Board of Trustees oversees the running of BuryILD and Contact Leisure.
BuryILD was a founding member of the Federation of Local Supported Living Groups, which promotes the development of family led groups in the Northwest.
The more donations we can receive the better quality and variety of leisure activities we can provide to our members who have learning disabilities.
